Dense wooden mask in the shape of a slender oval. The mask was carved to resemble a prominent raised nasal septum, flowing to a tapered forehead with a relief lizard at the center and layered crescent forms at the sides. Small Conus Shell pupils are inset into its projecting concentric carved eyes, and an engraved curving pattern with downturned relief mouth is seen below. Crack along right edge, encrusted patina. Sepik River, New Guinea. Provenance: Estate of Dr. Ruth Lax, NYC.
