Abelam Ancestor Figure
Full male figure standing with legs bent inward, pointed penis, arms carved away from body and hands resting at hips. The large oval face framed by beard, extensions behind ears, and surmounted by pair of tall hornbill birds. Front of surface painted in yellow, red ochre, brown-black, and cream pigment, back painted black. Front of feet broken off, some paint loss, minor age cracks. East Sepik province, Papua New Guinea. Provenance: Estate of Dr. Ruth Lax, NYC., ex. Robert Lewin, Brook Street Gallery, Ltd., London, 1973 (for $7,000 Pounds).
