Bird Finial Abelam Ancestor Figure
The tall figure stands on differentiated, muscular legs with knees slightly turned inwards, and short arms carved in relief on the body which end with hands on either side of his belly, above the prominent penis. Ovular face framed with flat beard below and hair above. Bears two rising horn-like projectiles at top with a long-beaked bird seated between. Some paint loss to the red, white, yellow and black pigment, some normal surface weathering and age cracks. East Sepik province, Papua New Guinea. Generally intact and excellent condition.
