Product Description

Elaborately painted polychrome ceramic, round bottomed, drinking cup with active and dense mythological references on 2 minor and 2 major registers. On the bottom, smiling, disembodied heads fly towards enigmatic six lobed batons. Above them is a minor serial imagery band of interlocking scroll stairsteps linking the under and over worlds. Above them, in the principle narrative band, fly costumed shamans in elaborate, proliferous regalia personifying the principle life force on earth. The last band is again serial images of interlocked proliferous icons in the duality colors apart from the shaman and represented in life by his golden facial artifacts. Some wear from use prior to interment but otherwise intact and unrestored. Provenance: Ex. Jean-Eugene Lions collection, Geneva, Switzerland.
