Chancay Mummy Mask with Silver Appliques
Cotton-linen woven, sack shaped mask having cutout, applique features of silver including the node-decorated headband, the very prominent nose, perforated eyes and jagged-toothed mouth. Woven cloth band dangles hang from the temples and terminate in stylized human faces. Gauze and magenta, fringed bands across forehead, beneath silver diadem. Sack once filled with leaves and placed over the mummy’s face. Now empty.. Some tattering of the fabric, loss to dangling faces, hole next to nose and some crushing or distortion to the silver appliques. Private Venice collection.
